PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula builds on the original, clinically proven PreserVision AREDS formula, with lutein and zeaxanthin replacing beta-carotene based on the National Eye Institute’s Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS 2).
PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula builds on the original, clinically proven PreserVision AREDS Formula, with lutein and zeaxanthin replacing beta-carotene based on the AREDS2 study. PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula exactly matches the updated nutrient formula now recommended by the AMD experts at the National Eye Institute based on the AREDS2 study.
The first Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) trial, sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), a division of the National Institutes of Health, reported in 2001 that
- A high dose of antioxidant vitamins and Zinc (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta-carotene, Zinc and Copper) –> reduce some 25 percent of the risk of developing advanced AMD over a 5-year period.
A follow-up study (AREDS 2) -2006 to 2012 found that Lutein and Zeaxanthin may provide additional risk reduction.
The Results of the AREDS/AREDS 2 Trials Showed a Number of Important Things
- High levels of antioxidants and Zinc can reduce the risk of vision loss n high-risk patients from advanced AMD by about 30%.
- Patients with minimal AMD do not take advantage from supplements.
- A daily multi-vitamin cannot substitute the high dose antioxidants and zinc found in the AREDS/AREDS2 formula.
- Adding Omega 3 Fatty Acids and removing Beta-carotene did not have any effect on progression of AMD.
- A few had urinary tract problems from zinc that required hospitalization.
- There was no increased risk of prostate cancer despite high-dose Vitamin E.
Who Should Take Nutritional Supplements?
